Potassium is a chemical element that has an atomic number 19. It is represented by the symbol K (Latin Kalium). The standard atomic mass of Potassium is 39.0983. In the periodic table, it is in the first group ( alkali group) and period 4. Its electronic configuration is [Ar] 4s1. It is an S-block element. It is a soft metal with a silvery-white colour. It has only one valence electron. It is highly reactive and producing potassium peroxide. On reacting with water it produced hydrogen gas which releases a large amount of heat on ignition. At STP Potassium is solid. Its meting point is 336.7 K ?(63.5 °C, ?146.3 °F) and boiling point is 1032 K ?(759 °C, ?1398 °F).

Its electronegativity is 0.82 (Pauling scale) and oxidation states are −1, +1, depending on the bonding atom. Potassium has 25 known isotopes in which two of them are stable isotope. K-40 has a half-life of 1.250×109 years. Potassium ions are essential for all cells. Its deficiency can cause various electrocardiographic abnormalities. It is necessary for the nerve cell membrane, for normal nerve transmission.
