Potassium chloride is a chemical compound composed of potassium and chloride ions. Its chemical formula is KCl and its molar mass is 74.555 g·mol/g. It a metal halide salt also called potassium salt. Naturally, it occurs in the form of minerals such as sylvite or sylvinite. In food preservation, it has known by E number additive E508. It is an odourless compound with white colour. It has a very high solubility in water and taste like salt.

World health organisation listed it as Essential Medicines. potassium chloride is used in fertilizers since plants need potassium for their growth.

what causes high potassium levels.jpg

What causes high potassium levels?

Consuming a large number of potassium compounds can lead to Hyperkalemia. The word "hyperkalemia" is from hyper- meaning high; kalium meaning potassium and -emia, meaning "in the blood". When potassium level increases from 5.5mmol/L it is considered hyperkalemia. Normal potassium levels are 3.5 to 5.5 mmol/L. Hyperkalemia has no specific symptoms but can be detected during a blood test. A low level of Potassium is associated with cardiac arrhythmia.

What is acesulfame potassium?

Acesulfame potassium is an artificial sweetener. It is also known by other names like  Ace K and Acesulfame K (K is for potassium). (IUPAC name Potassium 6-methyl-2,2-dioxo-2H-1,2λ6,3-oxathiazin-4-olate). Its Chemical formula is C4H4KNO4S. Acesulfame potassium molar mass is 201.242g/mol.  It is the potassium salt of 6-methyl-1,2,3-oxathiazine-4(3H)-one 2,2-dioxide. It was discovered by German chemist Karl Clauss in 1967. It has a white crystalline appearance and used as a sweetener in many products. It is used as a calorie-free sugar substitute. Acesulfame K is stable in moderate acidic and basic conditions and under heat (Melting point 225 °C (437 °F; 498 K) making it a good choice for many products and baking.
